5 steps to prepare a digital marketing proposal

A digital marketing proposal is a formal written marketing plan to document the planning process, it helps support people and organizations involved in advertising the products and services.

People usually thought it should be a long and formal document. In fact, it is just an answer to three questions, Where are we now? Where are we going? And how do we get there? Hence organizations can visualize how to coordinate the marketing programs with schedules and then prepare budgets to run an operation smoothly.

Step one: Examine the market (aka ‘situation analysis’). Explore important matters about market conditions, potential consumers and the competition in the market. It’s recommended to collect from a variety of sources before writing your plan to increase credibility. For example: How large is the market? What are the key trends affecting it, like economic conditions or regulatory policies?

Step two: Prepare a strategy. Include 3 parts, including Segmenting (grouping your customers around a particular benefit that they all seek, so the company can focus marketing on the benefit that it performs best), next is Targeting (decide which customers in your segment you're going after first), then finally Positioning (convincing claim, aka value proposition about the benefit which you mentioned in a part of segmentation).

Step three: Introduce the Tactical section. What products (or services) do we offer? What are the price points? How do we promote their offerings, especially in terms of their main value proposition of why customers should buy from them? This is commonly known as the 4Ps.

Step four: Ready for the Implementation. The details to place your plan into action. Each KPI should have a target of what you expect to happen, and also an approximation number around that target. If something is going in the wrong direction, marketers should take action immediately to solve the problem.

Step five: Forecast the Financial ability. Describes the budget needed for the plan and the forecast of what you expect in terms of future revenues or other business goals. How profit and loss statements and how profitability has changed over time. This section can be also conducted at the beginning of the proposal.

  • Create a calendar of when you write each section of the plan. A good marketer should be disciplined and doesn't write a marketing plan over a night.
  • During team meetings, create a blank PowerPoint file with the titles of each section on a different page. Then write or type the collected information into the appropriate slide to make key decisions because now the document is up to date as you move through the process.

  1. It is an interesting blog, and I find that I reviewed and learned something new from your blog. I am impressed with five specific and clarified steps that you segmented for a marketing proposal, especially in step five when you considered the financial ability in the proposal. However, I maybe misunderstand the two first steps in your process. For market examination, it's better if you include STDP process (Segmentation, Targeting, Differentiation, and Positioning) here, then in step two, a strategy for digital marketing plan should follow the SMART framework (specific, measurable, actionable, relevant, and time-oriented). Anyway, the post's still very useful for me, and thank you for your sharing.

    1. Uh..oh, thank you for mentioning the fact that I miss the 'Differentiation' in the market examination.

And, yes, I agree that the SMART framework should also be included in the the proposal to help guide goal setting.Or maybe, I can try to add 2 more steps which are Evaluated and Reviewed to be "SMARTER" :D Do you think I should add it :D?

  2. Wow, this is so interesting. Thanks to your post, I could apply these strategies to my brand in this course. But I think you should say more detail about this such as SEO strategy or SMART method to set a objective for a business. Anyways, I always love your posts, they are decorated with catchy templates and I feel like reading more with this style of decoration. Thank you !

    1. Thank you for your advices and compliments Han.

I think SMART method would be super useful to prepare a strategy for digital marketing plan. I think in our upcoming plan, we should also expanded it to include extra focus areas - SMARTER which E stands for Evaluated and R for Reviewed ^^.

  3. Hi Minh Chau,

I was just strolling around the Canvas Discussion and came across your post :) Excellent advice on the guidelines in order to create a winning digital marketing proposal. However, I would want to add a few points to your site in order to make it more comprehensive:

    - Step 1: Situational Analysis should be more details. Beside the aforementioned factors you should also consider macro and micro-environment (i.e: Economic-Geographic-Political-Legal-Social and most importantly Cultural to somewhat have more understandings about the market)

    - Step 2: Strategy Preparation - If you already mentioned STP (standing for Segmentation-Targeting-Positioning), why did you exclude "Differentiation"? Differentiation could be understand as launching items tailored to a specific segment of the market for a competitive edge. It could be your business strengths comparing to competitors

    - Step 3: Strategic Planning, you did great in this part when considering 4Ps Marketing Mix Framework. But every digital marketing plan have many more aspects to considered, you can read more about 7Ps Marketing Mix framework here: https://www.smartinsights.com/marketing-planning/marketing-models/how-to-use-the-7ps-marketing-mix/

    - Step 4: I think this should be the last step in the marketing proposal. After you have calculate all the marketing budget you would spend for the strategy, then the KPIs comes in needed. One metrics all business should be considered here is ROI (Return on Investment) to see how successful the marketing plan is. That is also the reason why KPIs and Metrics should be the last step.

In any case, I adore reading your writings because they are decorated with appealing templates and I want to keep reading. Keep up the good work!

    Warmest regards,
    Nga Than.

For the last few days, I was so frustrate and stressful because I don't know what and how to start the Assignment 2 because Digital Marketing is my Minor course( ◔ ʖ̯ ◔ ). I did have a look at a LinkedIn online course and took note down some piece of infomations and tips which I found interesting. This blog is actually my note which I would like to share, but it seem that I've misundertood multiple concept and left out some important points. I'm so glad that you guys have pointed it out (✿ ♡‿♡).

  6. Hello Chau, first impression that your blog is very impressive and eye-catching. To evaluate your blog, I would say that you have completely covered all the fundamental stages which are essential for newbies to identify a path to work on. However, I believe their information is pretty broad, and you should recommend some beneficial techniques, such as the STPD process or the SMAT framework, as well as a proposal template that they should utilize.

In terms of content presentation, it lacks relevant graphics that might provide in-depth knowledge and make the site more appealing. Furthermore, for certain sections, such as step 2, you have multiple distinct points, which I believe may be separated into a single paragraph to highlight the important aspects. Personally, I think that most people would scan for key information that they are seeking before reading your blog in depth; hence, it is vital to emphasize these areas to attract them. Finally, you'll need some credible references to back up your claims and make the blog appear more professional and trustworthy.
